On Thursday, September 21, 1989, just 180 miles away from the eye of Hurricane Hugo, Georgia Southern welcomed the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, ESPN, and a national television audience to "The World's Largest Hurricane Hugo Party." The game called on ESPN by Barry Tompkins and Gene Washington
The game was Geogia Southern's first night game. Temporary lighting was brought in to Paulson Stadium for the game to be held. Also, a phoneline was kept open between the Paulson Stadium Press Box and the Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
