1921

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association had grown to over 30 members, the larger members of the SIAA reorganized in a meeting in Gainesville, on December 12-13, 1920, called by Professor S.V. Sanford of Georgia, who served as the first president of the SoCon at the meeting. Formally created on February 25, 1921.

Once again, the conference was growing rather large, so the 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the SEC at the annual SoCon meeting of December 8-9, 1932, in Knoxville. The 10 coastal members remained in the SoCon. Dr. Frank L. McVey of Kentucky was elected president of the new conference

The withdrawal of seven schools from the SoCon came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the SoCon's annual spring meeting.The ACC was founded at the Sedgefield Inn, near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members drawing up the conference by-laws.
